Trekking Alpamayo Circuit - 10 days

This incredible tour, also known as the Cedros Trek, Includes beautiful landscapes of imposing, snow-capped mountains and exceptional views of magnificent, tranquil lakes. The most impressive attraction on the circuit is the Alpamayo Mountain, listed as the most beautiful mountain in the world. This trail is one of the most important in the breath-taking Blanca Mountain Range. The walk sometimes begins in Hualcayan, a small town located just past the western wall of the mountain range. However, we advise you to start in Cashapampa or Vaquería. With a height of 5080 m, the Alpamayo Circuit offers incredible views of the vibrant Andean lagoons and the snow-capped mountains of Santa Cruz, Huascarán, Chacraraju, and Taulliraju.To undertake this route of approximately 98 km, it is advisable to have previous experience in this type of walk. The route requires an amount of physical effort, due to the variations of the terrain and its height.
Day 1: Huaraz – Cashapampa – Llamacorral camp.
We will head north of Huaraz in private transport, passing through the Callejón Huayalas. On the way, we will observe some villages – Carhuaz, Yungay, Caraz, and arrive at Cashapampa (2900 m / 9,514 ft). There, our donkey driver will be waiting for us with mules to carry our luggage. We will start our trek to Llamacorral, where we will spend the night. Duration: approx. 5 hours of trekking.
Day 2: Llamacorral – Alpamayo viewpoint– Taullipampa camp.
We will start our trek early in the morning, passing by the beautiful lakes Ichiccocha (3850 m / 12,631 ft) and Hatuncocha (3900 m / 12,795 ft). The trail will zigzag up to Alpamayo Base Camp, where we will enjoy incredible panoramic views over the Alpamayo, Artesonraju, Aguja and Caraz mountains. From there, we will descend to Taullipampa camp (4250 m / 13,943 ft).
Day 3: Taullipampa – Punta Union pass – Tuctubamba camp.
After an early breakfast, we will start our 4 hour trek to Punta Union Pass (4750 m / 15,583 ft). It offers magnificent views over the mountains Taulliraju, Artesonraju, Pukajircas, Quitaraju, Alpamayo and over some lagoons. We will descend to Tuctupampa (4200 m / 13,779 ft), where we will spend the night.
Day 4: Tuctubamba – Pucaraju pass – Huecrococha camp.
After breakfast, we will begin an ascent of approximately 3 hours to Pucajirca Pass (4640 m / 15,223 ft). We will enjoy spectacular views of some mountains: Chacraraju, Taulliraju, Chopicalqui, and others. We will descend by a zigzagging path to Quisuar Campsite (3950 m / 12,959 ft), passing by the Huescroncocha lagoon.
Day 5: Huecrococha – Tupatupa pass – Jancapampa camp.
We will walk approximately 3 hours to Tupatupa Pass (4400 m). We will descend to Pucajirca Base Camp, then to Jancapampa Campsite (3600 m / 11,811 ft), where we will spend the night in our tents.
Day 6: Jancapampa – Pucajirca pass – Huillca camp.
Early breakfast. We will hike to Yanacón pass (4610 m / 15,124 ft), enjoying the incredible landscapes. From the pass, we descend to Huillca camp at 4000 m / 13,123 ft. or if it is early and we still have strength, we can continue for about 50 minutes to Safuna Camp.
Day 7: Huillca – Mesapata pass – Cara Cara pass – Cruce Alpamayo camp.
This day we will pass through 2 passes: first Mesapata pass (4500m) and then we will continue the sequence until the Cara cara pass (4830m), where we will have the honor of admiring the picturesque lagoons and the view of the Alpamayo mountain. After some photos we will descend to the camp for about 8 hours.
Day 8: Rest day in Cruce Alpamayo (OTIONAL)
We spend another night at this same camp, to better appreciate the beauty of Alpamayo. We will walk near the Jancarurish lagoon, then continue along a rocky moraine until we reach the viewpoint of Nevado Alpamayo, from here you will have a spectacular triangular view of Alpamayo.
Day 8: Cruce Alpamayo – Ruina pampa –Osoruri camp.
Very early, after breakfast we start with an easy descent through an almost flat valley for 2 hours, then we will have a long climb to the Vientunan pass (4770 m / 15,649 ft) From here we will have a spectacular view of many mountains and landscapes. Then we descend for about 20 minutes to Osoruri camp (4560 m / 14,960 ft), here we spend the night in our tents.
Day 9: Osoruri –Cullicocha pass – Laguna Cullicocha – Calamina camp.
We will start the day with a light one hour walk to Cullicocha pass (4860 m / 15,944 ft). Later, we will descent to Cullicocha Lagoon, from here we will have phenomenal views of the three peaks of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We continue down a zigzac road until we reach our last camp called Calamina camp 3900 m / 12,795 ft.
Day 10: Calamina Camp – Hualcayan town – Return to Huaraz.
After having our last delicious breakfast, we will continue with a 2 to 3 hour hike downhill until we reach the village of Hualcayan (3000 m / 9,842 ft). Where our private transportation will be waiting for us to return to Huaraz after a long adventure.
